How to use Jira with TheyDo

Once your Jira integration is set up, you can link TheyDo solutions to Jira projects, keep statuses in sync, and track delivery progress directly from your journeys.

This article covers the day-to-day experience of working with the Jira integration.

Overview

The Jira integration creates a two-way connection between TheyDo solutions and Jira work items. You can push solutions from TheyDo into Jira, link existing Jira issues to solutions, and see status changes reflected in both tools.

Pushing a solution to Jira

When you're ready to move a solution into delivery:

  1. Open the solution in TheyDo.
  2. Select Push to Jira (or Link to Jira).
  3. Choose the Jira project and issue type (Epic, Story, Task, or Bug).
  4. The solution is created as a Jira work item, and the two are linked.

If you've set a default Jira project in your integration settings, that project will be pre-selected. You can always change it.

Keeping statuses in sync

With status mapping configured, when a Jira work item changes status, the linked TheyDo solution updates automatically.

For example, if an Epic moves to "In Progress" in Jira, the connected solution in TheyDo can update to your equivalent status — no manual updates needed.

You can configure which Jira statuses map to which TheyDo statuses in Settings > Integrations > Jira.

Two-way sync for titles and descriptions

If two-way synchronization is turned on, any changes to the title or description in Jira will also update in TheyDo. This is useful when engineers add acceptance criteria or update scope directly in Jira.

Note: If you'd prefer TheyDo to be the source of truth for titles and descriptions, keep two-way sync turned off.

Monitoring connection status

You can check the status of your Jira connection at any time in Settings > Integrations. The card will show one of the following states:

  • Active — the connection is healthy and syncing normally
  • Installing — setup is still in progress
  • Syncing — a data sync is running
  • Error — something needs attention; you may need to re-authorize or reinstall

Tips

  • You can connect multiple Jira projects to multiple TheyDo workspaces — each project is mapped independently.
  • Solutions that aren't yet linked to Jira won't appear in your Jira backlog until you push them.
  • Jira sync is webhook-driven, so updates happen automatically without needing a manual resync.
