Create summary insights with AI
Overview
A well-researched journey can hold dozens of insights per lane, which is great for evidence and terrible for a quick read. The summarize action creates a summary insight: a single AI-generated insight that rolls up the insights in a lane, with the originals attached underneath as evidence. This article covers how to create a summary insight and how summary insights behave differently from regular ones.
Note: Summarizing requires AI to be enabled for your organization and workspace.
Create a summary insight
The summarize action works per lane: it aggregates the insights within one insights lane on the journey canvas.
- Open your journey on the canvas.
- Go to the header of the insights lane you want to summarize.
- Open the lane's AI dropdown.
- Choose
Summarize journeys. - The AI creates a summary insight that aggregates the insights in the lane.
Note: Despite the name of the action, the summary covers the insights in that single lane, not the whole journey. To summarize a full journey across lanes, summarize each insights lane, or ask the TheyDo Agent for a narrative summary of the journey.
How summary insights behave
A summary insight is a real insight in your library, but it works a little differently because its evidence is other insights rather than quotes:
- The Quotes tab is hidden. The evidence behind a summary insight is its child insights, and those carry the quotes.
- The Insights tab is labeled
Summary evidenceand lists the child insights the summary was built from. - You can't manually link additional child insights to a summary insight.
- In the insight library, summary insights show an AI sparkle icon in the Origin column (hover shows
Summarized by AI).
Note: Summary insights can't be merged with other insights.
When to use it
Summary insights work best as the executive layer on top of detailed research: a stakeholder opens the summary, gets the headline, and can drill into the child insights when they want the detail. They're also useful before a readout or review, when you need to compress a lane's worth of findings into something a room can absorb.
Tip: Re-run the summarize action after a major mining run or research push, so the summary reflects the current state of the lane rather than the state from a quarter ago.
