Merge and Split Insights with Journey AI
The Merge or Split Insights feature uses Journey AI to help you consolidate related insights or break down complex insights into more specific ones. This allows you to organize and refine your journey insights for better clarity and analysis.
Before using Merge or Split Insights, ensure:
AI is enabled in your organization settings
Your journey has insights with quotes attached - insights must have supporting quotes linked to them
You have created insights either:
Manually with linked quotes, or
Through AI-powered insight mining from uploaded data sources
Note: You can edit and update AI-generated insights at any time. Once manually edited, they are considered manually overridden.
Merging Insights
Use this feature to combine two or more related insights into a single, cohesive insight.
How to Merge Insights
In journey view, select two or more insights by clicking the checkboxes in the top left corner of each insight card
Click the "Merge" button in the bulk action bar
AI will display a progress indicator: "Merging is happening" (you can cancel at any time)
Review the results:
Original insights appear crossed out but remain visible for reference
A new merged insight is created in the step
A side panel opens on the right showing:
Original insights section (hover to see full descriptions)
New insight section with the merged description
Understanding Merged Scores
When insights are merged, their scores are combined and averaged. The quotes from all original insights are weighted, and the resulting score reflects the combined evidence.
Example: Two insights with individual scores might result in a merged insight with a score of 0.15
Accepting or Rejecting
Reject: Discard the merge and try again with different insights
Accept: Keep only the newly created merged insight (original insights are removed)
Splitting Insights
Use this feature to break down a complex insight into multiple, more specific insights.
How to Split an Insight
Hover over the insight card you want to split
In the top right corner, click the "Split insight" option (located alongside "Unlink insights" and "Comments")
AI will display a progress indicator: "Splitting insight" (you can cancel at any time)
Review the results:
Original insight appears crossed out but remains visible for reference
Multiple new insights are created (typically 2-4 insights)
A side panel opens on the right showing:
Original insight section
New insights section with individual descriptions and scores
Understanding Split Results
Split insights are more specific than the original. Each new insight receives its own:
Title and description
Individual score based on supporting quotes
Classification (Need, Gain, Pain, Observation, etc.)
Example: An observation called "Wardrobe refreshment" might split into:
Need: Quality and durability
Gain: Timeless style
Observation: Purchasing habits
Accepting or Rejecting
Reject: Discard the split results and keep the original insight
Accept: Keep only the newly created split insights (original insight is removed)
Best Practices
Review before accepting: Always review the AI-generated results in the side panel before accepting changes
Keep originals for reference: Original insights remain crossed out (not deleted) until you accept, allowing you to compare changes
Iterate as needed: You can reject and try again if the results don't meet your needs
Combine approaches: Merge related insights first, then split if needed, or vice versa
Common Use Cases
When to Merge
Consolidating duplicate or overlapping insights
Combining related observations from different steps
Simplifying journeys with too many granular insights
When to Split
Breaking down broad insights into actionable specifics
Separating mixed insight types (e.g., a Need combined with a Pain)
Creating more targeted insights for analysis
Tip: Hover over any insight card in the side panel to see its full description and better understand how AI transformed your insights.
